Where does NHL talent actually come from? This bar-chart race runs every NHL entry draft from 1980 to 2025, ranking countries by how many players they produced each year — and splitting each country's bar by where those players developed: Canadian major junior (CHL), US college and junior (NCAA/USHL), or European leagues.
The story is Canada's slipping monopoly. In 1980 it produced about 71% of all drafted players; by 2025 that is down to roughly 41%. The United States climbs on a wall of college hockey, and Sweden, Russia and Czechia surge in after the fall of the Iron Curtain — the map of world hockey talent spreading out over 45 years.
